If you have searched for mold symptoms in kids, you have probably found claims ranging from a runny nose to memory loss. That range is a problem, because it makes it hard to know when to worry. We remediate mold for a living, which means we are qualified to talk about buildings and moisture, not to diagnose your child. So this article sticks to what the CDC, the Institute of Medicine, and the World Health Organization actually say, links to all of it, and is clear about where the evidence stops.
Start with the honest headline
The CDC's own summary is blunter than most marketing on this subject: exposure to damp and mouldy environments may cause a variety of health effects, or none at all. Some children in a damp house get symptoms. Others in the same house do not. Sensitivity varies between individuals, and that variation is the single most important thing to understand before reading anything else.
What the evidence does support
In 2004 the Institute of Medicine reviewed the research and found sufficient evidence to link indoor mold exposure with upper respiratory tract symptoms, cough, and wheeze in otherwise healthy people. It also found sufficient evidence linking mold with asthma symptoms in people who already have asthma, and with hypersensitivity pneumonitis in individuals susceptible to that condition.
In practice, for a child, that looks like the ordinary and unglamorous end of the symptom list. These are the signs actually worth watching for:
Stuffy or runny nose. Persistent congestion that does not follow the usual pattern of a cold, especially one that eases when they are away from the house.
Cough and wheeze. A cough that lingers well past an infection, or wheezing that appears in particular rooms.
Red or itchy eyes. Irritation without an obvious cause, often alongside the nasal symptoms.
Skin rash or itching. Irritation on skin that has been in contact with affected materials.
Worse asthma control. For a child who already has asthma, more frequent symptoms or more reliever use is the clearest signal on this list.

The one child-specific finding
There is a finding that applies specifically to children rather than to people in general, and it is the reason damp housing is treated as a childhood health issue rather than a nuisance. Following the World Health Organization's 2009 guidance on dampness and mould, the CDC notes that studies have suggested a potential link between early mold exposure and the development of asthma in some children, particularly those who may be genetically susceptible to developing it.
Read that carefully, because the wording is doing real work. It is a potential link, in some children, with a genetic susceptibility involved. It is not a claim that mold causes asthma in a healthy child. The same CDC summary adds something more actionable: interventions that improve housing conditions can reduce illness from asthma and respiratory allergies. Fixing the building is the part with evidence behind it.
What the evidence does not support
This is where most articles on this subject go wrong, and where an earlier version of this one did too. You will read that mold exposure impairs children's memory and concentration, makes them anxious or sad, or causes chronic conditions in later life. Those claims are not on the Institute of Medicine's list of effects with sufficient evidence, and the CDC does not make them.
That does not prove the opposite, and it is not a reason to live with mold. It means that if your child is struggling with concentration or mood, mold is not a diagnosis and treating the house is not a treatment plan. That is a conversation for your paediatrician, and confusing the two can delay something that actually needs attention.
Why you do not need to know which mold it is
Parents often ask whether they should test to find out if it is black mold. The CDC's position is unusually direct: the health effects of mold differ between people, so you cannot rely on sampling and culturing to know whether someone might become sick, and no matter what type of mold is present, you need to remove it.
The EPA reaches the same practical conclusion from another direction. There are no federal limits for mold or mold spores, so a sample cannot be compared against a legal threshold, and where growth is already visible, sampling is usually unnecessary. Species identification rarely changes what happens next.
What a parent can actually check
Mold needs moisture, so the useful search is for water rather than for mold. In Louisville housing, that tends to mean the same few places:
Basements. Especially finished ones, where framing and drywall sit against a cool masonry wall and stay damp out of sight.
Bathrooms without working extraction. A fan that is not vented outside moves humidity around rather than removing it.
Window frames and sills. Condensation collects here every winter and is easy to miss behind a curtain.
Under and behind fixed furniture. Wardrobes and units against exterior walls restrict airflow and hide the wall they sit on.
Anywhere with a past leak. A roof, appliance, or pipe leak that was dried on the surface but never verified as dry inside the structure.
A persistent musty smell with nothing visible is worth taking seriously. Odor usually means growth somewhere the eye cannot reach, and it is the most common reason we find mold inside a wall cavity rather than on it.
When to call someone
Call a doctor about your child's symptoms. Call a remediation company about the building. Those are different questions, and we are only qualified to answer the second.
On the building side, the EPA gives a usable threshold: if the affected area is under about 10 square feet, roughly a three foot by three foot patch, most people can handle it themselves. Above that, or after significant water damage, it recommends following professional remediation guidance. The other clear triggers are a musty smell you cannot locate, mold that returns after cleaning, and any growth that follows a leak or flood. Growth that keeps returning almost always means the moisture source is still there, because cleaning the surface never addresses what is feeding it.
